Overview:

General worker, Agulhas National Park is seeking three highly motivated and dedicated individuals to fill the crucial role of General Worker. These are fixed-term contract General worker positions, each lasting for a period of three years and concluding in March 2028. The successful candidates will play a vital role in maintaining the cleanliness, functionality, and aesthetic appeal of the park, ensuring a positive experience for visitors and contributing to the overall conservation efforts.

As a General Worker, you will be an integral part of the park operations, assisting with a wide range of tasks related to housekeeping, maintenance, and groundskeeping. You will be expected to work effectively both independently and as part of a team, demonstrating a strong work ethic and a commitment to excellence. The successful General worker candidates will report directly to the Duty Manager, receiving guidance and support to effectively fulfill their responsibilities.

Important Note Regarding Accommodation:

Please note that the successful candidates will be responsible for securing their own accommodation. General worker Agulhas National Park does not currently offer official accommodation options for General Workers within the park boundaries. General worker Candidates should factor this into their decision to apply and be prepared to arrange suitable housing independently.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Comprehensive Cleaning Services: Execute a wide range of cleaning duties, including but not limited to:
    • Thorough removal of all types of rubbish and waste materials from designated areas.
    • Cleaning and maintenance of fireplaces and braai facilities to ensure they are safe and presentable.
    • Regular cleaning and sanitation of office buildings, including dusting, vacuuming, and disinfecting surfaces.
    • Maintaining the cleanliness and hygiene of ablution facilities, ensuring they are stocked with necessary supplies.
    • Detailed cleaning of accommodations, including guest rooms and staff quarters, to meet high standards of cleanliness and comfort.
    • Maintaining the cleanliness and tidiness of surrounding areas, including walkways, parking lots, and recreational spaces.
  • General Maintenance Support: Provide assistance with minor general maintenance tasks to ensure the functionality and upkeep of park infrastructure, including:
    • Assisting with basic repairs to buildings, such as patching holes, painting walls, and fixing minor leaks.
    • Contributing to the maintenance of roads and pathways, including clearing debris and ensuring safe passage.
    • Supporting the maintenance of the park’s water supply system, assisting with tasks such as checking for leaks and cleaning filters.
    • General worker Assisting with general maintenance of other infrastructure elements as required.
  • Groundskeeping and Landscaping: Contribute to the upkeep and beautification of the park’s terrain and gardens through:
    • Regular mowing of lawns and grassy areas to maintain a neat and tidy appearance.
    • General landscaping activities, including planting flowers, pruning shrubs, and removing weeds.
    • Maintaining the overall aesthetic appeal of the park’s grounds.

Essential Requirements:

  • Education: Successful completion of Grade 12 (Matric) or possession of a National Certificate Vocational (NCV) Level 4 qualification.
  • Experience: Previous experience in housekeeping, maintenance, or a similar role within a hospitality, tourism, or environmental setting is highly advantageous.
  • Skills:
    • Demonstrated proficiency in basic general maintenance and storeroom management practices.
    • Exceptional attention to detail and unwavering commitment to maintaining high standards of cleanliness and upkeep.
    • Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting heavy objects, bending, and standing for extended periods.
    • Strong self-motivation, excellent time management skills, a sense of responsibility, and a disciplined approach to work.
    • Fundamental knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and its implications in the workplace.
  • Availability: Willingness to work weekends and public holidays as required by the park’s operational needs.

Desirable Attributes (Added Advantages):

  • Possession of a valid First Aid certification.
  • A valid driver’s licence.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintenance and Upkeep: Meticulously clean and maintain all vehicles, machinery, tools, and equipment according to established procedures and schedules. This includes, but is not limited to, routine cleaning, lubrication, minor repairs, and reporting any significant malfunctions or damage to the supervisor. Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and operational efficiency of all equipment.
  • Operational Logging: Maintain a detailed and accurate logbook documenting all maintenance activities performed on vehicles, machinery, and equipment, including dates, specific tasks completed, and any parts replaced or repairs made. This logbook serves as a critical record for tracking maintenance history and identifying potential issues.
  • Ad-Hoc Support: Provide General worker assistance with various ad-hoc duties and tasks as assigned by the supervisor. These duties may include, but are not limited to, assisting with material handling, site preparation, general housekeeping, and other tasks as required to support operational needs. Flexibility and a willingness to assist in various areas are essential.
  • Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Compliance: Strictly adhere to all Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) practices and regulations at all times. This includes wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), following safety protocols for operating machinery and handling materials, and reporting any potential hazards or unsafe conditions to the supervisor immediately. A commitment to a safe working environment is paramount.

Compensation:

  • The annual salary range for this position is R136,583.09 – R182,758. The specific salary offered will be determined based on the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and relevant skills, as well as internal equity considerations.
