Requirements:

Must have at least an ABET qualification or completed Grade 10.
Need a minimum of one year of experience as a porter in a hospital.
Must be available to work different shifts, including long hours, weekends, and holidays.
Should be a good team member and work well with others.
Must follow all rules for workplace safety, health, and preventing infections.
Must be able to solve problems, communicate clearly (written and spoken), get along with people, write reports, and handle stressful situations.
Should know the rules for people working in public service.

Job responsibilities for Porters:

Wheelchairs and stretchers, frequently used for transporting bodies, must be thoroughly disinfected after each use to prevent cross-contamination and maintain a safe environment.

Collaboration with private undertakers is a crucial aspect of mortuary operations. This includes assisting with the respectful and dignified collection of deceased individuals from various locations, adhering to all legal and ethical protocols. Accurate and thorough completion of BI 1663 documentation, the official record of death, is essential for legal and administrative purposes. Maintaining an up-to-date and accurate mortuary register, documenting the admission, storage, and release of each deceased individual, is also a critical responsibility. This register serves as an important audit trail and facilitates efficient tracking of remains.

Providing compassionate support to grieving relatives during the often-difficult identification process is a key element of the role. This includes guiding them through the procedure with empathy and sensitivity, answering their questions with clarity, and ensuring they are treated with respect and understanding.
