Minimum Requirements:
- Education: Matriculation Certificate (Grade 12) is essential. This eskom demonstrates a basic level of education and literacy required to understand instructions, follow safety protocols, and complete necessary paperwork.
Experience:
- Workshop & Apparatus Cleaning: Proven experience in the thorough cleaning and maintenance of workshops and testing apparatus is required. This experience should demonstrate the ability to maintain a clean and organized workspace, contributing to a safe and efficient working environment.
- Technical Field Exposure: A minimum of 1 to 2 years of practical experience within a technical field is necessary. This experience should provide a foundational understanding of technical operations and equipment, enabling the candidate to assist in supporting roles effectively.
Skills and Competencies:
- Time Management: The ability to effectively manage time and prioritize tasks is critical to ensure efficient workflow and timely completion of duties. The eskom candidate should be able to organize their work to meet deadlines and adapt to changing priorities.
- Overtime Availability: Flexibility to work overtime when required is essential to support operational needs and meet production targets. The candidate must be willing to work extended hours as needed.
- Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA): Competence in compiling a HIRA is essential. This involves identifying potential hazards in the workplace, assessing the associated risks, and recommending appropriate control measures to mitigate those risks, ensuring a safe working environment.
- Conflict Resolution: The ability to effectively manage and resolve conflicts that may arise in the workplace is important. The candidate should possess strong interpersonal skills and be able to mediate disputes constructively.
- Interpersonal and Communication Skills: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential for effective collaboration with colleagues and supervisors. The eskom candidate should be able to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing, and work effectively as part of a team
Required Knowledge:
- Thorough Understanding of Cleaners Work Procedure for the Workshops: Possess a comprehensive understanding of the established cleaning protocols and procedures specifically designed for the workshop environment. This includes knowledge of appropriate cleaning agents for different surfaces and materials, waste disposal procedures, and the proper use of cleaning equipment.
- Solid Foundation in Safety Rules and Regulations: Demonstrate a fundamental understanding of safety regulations applicable to a workshop environment, including emergency procedures, hazard identification, and the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). The eskom candidate should be familiar with safety guidelines related to working around electrical equipment and high-voltage areas.
- Competency in Working at Height: Be capable of safely working at elevated levels, utilizing appropriate safety equipment such as ladders, scaffolding, or platforms. This includes understanding fall protection procedures and the ability to identify and mitigate potential hazards associated with working at height.
- Practical Technical Skills: Possess a basic understanding of technical concepts relevant to the workshop environment, such as tool usage, equipment handling, and general maintenance procedures. This could involve tasks like basic equipment cleaning, lubrication, and assisting with minor repairs under supervision.
- Knowledge of OHSA (Occupational Health and Safety Act): Demonstrate a working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (or relevant local equivalent) and its application to the workshop environment. This eskom includes understanding employer and employee responsibilities related to workplace safety and health.

- Analytical and Attentive to Detail: Demonstrate a keen eye for detail and the ability to meticulously clean and inspect equipment and work areas. Be able to identify potential safety hazards and report them promptly.
- Self-Disciplined: Be able to work independently and manage time effectively to complete assigned tasks efficiently and to a high standard. Be responsible and accountable for one’s own actions and adherence to safety protocols.
Key Responsibilities:
- Electrical Test Preparation: Prepare test equipment meticulously before electrical testing on transformers according to required test specifications. This includes cleaning connections, inspecting insulation, and ensuring proper grounding.
- Workshop Maintenance: Consistently maintain the workshop in a clean, safe, and organized condition. This includes sweeping, mopping, dusting, and removing debris to ensure a hazard-free environment.
- Cleaning of High-Voltage Equipment: Thoroughly clean all high voltage test apparatus, test instruments, and the surrounding test area as required. This is a critical task that requires careful attention to detail and the use of appropriate cleaning agents to prevent contamination and ensure accurate test results.
- Tools, Equipment and Housekeeping: Maintain the tools and equipment in clean and ready to use order. Return all items to its designated place.
- Facilitating Workshop Toolbox Talks: Participate in workshop toolbox talks to communicate safety guidelines and address any concerns relating to safety.
- SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality) Compliance: Adhere to all SHEQ policies and procedures to ensure a safe and environmentally responsible work environment. This includes participating in safety audits, reporting incidents, and promoting a culture of safety consciousness.
