Job Overview

As an Underground Fitter, your primary role will be to install, maintain, and repair underground mining equipment, ensuring that operations run smoothly with minimal downtime. Key Responsibilities
- Maintenance & Repairs
- Perform routine maintenance and emergency repairs on underground mining equipment such as crushers, conveyor systems, drills, loaders, and hydraulic systems.
- Conduct troubleshooting and fault-finding to diagnose mechanical problems in a timely and efficient manner.
- Ensure all maintenance tasks align with manufacturer specifications and industry best practices.
- Equipment Installation & Upgrades
- Install new equipment and machinery underground as per operational requirements.
- Upgrade and modify existing mining machinery to improve performance and efficiency.
- Work with engineers and other technical staff to implement new technologies in the mining process.
- Preventive Maintenance & Record Keeping
- Conduct regular preventive maintenance to increase equipment lifespan and reduce unexpected breakdowns.
- Maintain detailed records of maintenance activities, repairs, and inspections for audit and compliance purposes.
- Follow scheduled maintenance plans to ensure optimal performance of mining equipment.
- Safety & Compliance
- Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and regulations set by the mining company and industry authorities.
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure compliance with all health and safety standards.
- Report any safety hazards or concerns immediately to management.
- Collaboration & Teamwork
- Work closely with fellow maintenance team members, electricians, engineers, and mining operators to ensure efficient workflow.
- Assist in training junior fitters or apprentices to improve overall team competency.
Qualifications & Experience Required
To be considered for this role, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Education:
- Matric Certificate (Grade 12) or equivalent qualification.
- Recognized Fitter Trade Test Certificate (Red Seal qualification preferred).
- Work Experience:
- Minimum 5 years of experience as an Underground Fitter in a mining environment.
- Extensive hands-on experience working with mining equipment and machinery.
- Technical & Practical Skills:
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings and manuals.
- Proficiency in using specialized tools and diagnostic equipment for mechanical repairs.
- Additional Requirements:
- Valid driver’s license (essential).
- Willingness to work underground in a physically demanding environment.
- Ability to work shifts and overtime when required.
