JOB SUMMARY
The Mediclinic Care Worker plays a pivotal role within our healthcare team, acting as a dedicated support system to our nursing staff. The overarching objective of this position is to collaboratively contribute to the provision of exceptional and unequivocally safe patient care. This involves a commitment to proactively identifying, addressing, and ultimately fulfilling the diverse health needs of our patients, ensuring their comfort, dignity, and recovery remain paramount throughout their stay. KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will be expected to perform a comprehensive range of duties, contributing significantly to the smooth and effective operation of our patient care units:
- Collaborative Patient Care Delivery: Work in close partnership with registered nurses, enrolled nurses, and other members of the multidisciplinary healthcare team to deliver holistic and high-quality patient care. This involves assisting with daily patient activities, monitoring vital signs under supervision, supporting patient mobility, and ensuring a clean and organized patient environment. A strong team-player mentality is essential for success in this collaborative setting.
- Proactive Risk Identification and Reporting: Maintain a vigilant awareness of the patient environment, diligently identifying and promptly reporting any potential hazards, safety concerns, or deviations from established protocols. This includes, but is not limited to, reporting faulty equipment, spillages, unusual patient behavior, or any situation that could compromise patient or staff safety. All reporting will be conducted in strict adherence to Mediclinic’s comprehensive hospital safety policies and procedures.
- Enhancing the Patient Experience: Actively contribute to fostering a positive and supportive patient experience. This involves communicating effectively and empathetically with patients and their families, addressing non-clinical concerns, providing emotional support, and generally striving to create a comforting and reassuring atmosphere. You will assist nursing staff in ensuring patient comfort, dignity, and satisfaction are prioritized at all times.
- Administrative Support to Nursing Staff: Provide essential administrative assistance to the nursing team, thereby enabling them to focus more directly on clinical tasks. This may include, but is not limited to, maintaining accurate patient records, assisting with documentation, preparing patient charts, managing incoming calls, scheduling appointments, and performing other general clerical duties as required to support the efficient functioning of the ward.
- Commitment to Professional Development: Actively participate in the creation and maintenance of a dynamic workplace culture that champions continuous learning and skill enhancement. This involves enthusiastically engaging in ongoing training programs, workshops, and educational initiatives provided by Mediclinic. - Efficient Resource Management and Accountability: Exercise meticulous attention to detail in the management of medical supplies and equipment. Furthermore, you will be responsible for ensuring that all chargeable items and services are correctly documented and processed in accordance with hospital financial policies, contributing to the financial sustainability of our services.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
To be considered for this vital role, candidates must meet the following educational criteria:
- MUST HAVE: A suitable and recognized Care Worker certification from an accredited institution. This certification must demonstrate foundational knowledge and practical skills essential for providing direct patient support in a healthcare environment. Proof of certification will be required.
- NICE TO HAVE: A high school diploma or equivalent qualification (Grade 12). While not strictly mandatory, this demonstrates a broader educational foundation and may be advantageous in understanding complex procedures and communication within the healthcare setting.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Practical experience in a healthcare environment is non-negotiable for this position:
- MUST HAVE: Prior demonstrable work experience within a recognized healthcare setting (e.g., hospital, clinic, aged care facility). This experience should reflect exposure to patient interaction, an understanding of healthcare routines, and the ability to work effectively under supervision. Candidates should be prepared to provide references to validate their experience.
- NICE TO HAVE: No additional specific experience beyond the mandatory requirement is deemed necessary for this entry-level support role, as comprehensive on-the-job training will be provided.
NECESSARY SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
Beyond formal qualifications and experience, candidates must possess a core set of skills and knowledge crucial for success in this demanding yet rewarding role:
- Supply Management Acumen: A practical understanding of inventory management principles, including how to efficiently monitor stock levels, properly store supplies, and ensure the availability of essential items while minimizing waste.
- Incident Reporting and Documentation Proficiency: The ability to accurately and comprehensively report incidents, observations, and completed tasks, maintaining meticulous records in accordance with established medical and administrative protocols. This includes an understanding of the importance of clear, concise, and timely documentation.
- Awareness of Medical and Legal Risks: A fundamental comprehension of common medical and legal risks associated with patient care, including patient confidentiality (POPIA/HIPAA principles), infection control, patient safety protocols, and the importance of adhering to professional boundaries.
- Familiarity with Administrative Duties: A working knowledge of general office procedures, basic computer literacy, and the ability to perform routine administrative tasks efficiently and accurately.
- Patient Experience Principles: A deep understanding of the core elements that contribute to a positive and compassionate patient experience, including empathy, effective communication, respect for cultural diversity, and proactive problem-solving.
- Foundational Knowledge of Patient Care: Basic understanding of fundamental patient care principles, such as hygiene, nutrition, mobility assistance, observation skills, and basic first aid, all performed under the direct supervision of nursing staff.
- Infection Prevention and Control Expertise: A thorough knowledge of and adherence to established rules, guidelines, and procedures for preventing and controlling infections within a healthcare environment, including proper hand hygiene, PPE usage, and waste disposal.
